Worship At Home – November 29

Hearing God’s Word

Today is the first Sunday of the Season of Advent in the church calendar. Advent means “coming” or “arrival” and is about the coming of Christ. We celebrate the first advent of Jesus and anxiously await His second. This season is a time for remembering and rejoicing, watching and waiting, and a time to reflect upon the promises of God and to anticipate the fulfillment of those promises with patience, prayer and preparedness.

You might be worshiping by yourself today. Or you might be gathered with your spouse or household. You might be in a home, or in your car. Wherever and however you gather, we are the church celebrating the same promise: The King is coming! Jesus Christ has come and will come again. Hallelujah! As we worship the King today, we offer you this guide and resources.

Putting It Into Practice

We hear God’s Word and we put it into practice. As you watch the above videos and reflect on what God is saying to you, read the suggestions below and make a plan to do them either right now or at a set time this week.

Discuss

Take time to journal or discuss as a group your responses to these prompts:

  1. Advent reminds us that God came near, in Jesus, and is coming again. Does God feel near or far right now to you? How so?
  2. Is there a specific phrase or image in Isaiah 64 that gets your attention?
  3. Isaiah says we are like clay, and God our Father is the potter. What is an area of your life where you feel God shaping & forming you right now?
  4. Lighting candles is a significant symbol of Advent. What is one thing you can do this week to shine the hope of Jesus in dark places/lives?

Bless

This Advent, we are writing personal notes to our VP mission partners! Since we can’t do this in person, we have provided a way to write notes online and even submit a picture of you. If you have kids, you can even have them draw a picture and attach that. We hope to have all our submissions by Dec 20 so we can send the notes to the Mission Partners by Christmas.

Give

Heavenly Father, thank you that you can satisfy our every desire and need. Your word says that we should give honor to you with the first fruits of our wealth. Accept our tithes and offerings as a gift of worship to you. Multiply what we give for the effective growth of your kingdom. May Christ dwell in our hearts through faith so that we, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge. May we be filled with all the fullness of God. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.

Read

Let’s prepare our hearts this season by turning to scripture to hear God’s voice. This Advent guide follows the Bible Reading Plan; each week you’ll read passages from Isaiah, Psalms, the New Testament and the Gospels. Each day you’ll have questions for reflection to help you and your family prepare your hearts for Jesus’ coming. Click on the image below to order a free copy.

Pray

Share with those you are gathered with in worship today something you are rejoicing and praising God for, as well as ways you can pray for one another. Let us know how we can pray with you and also of any needs we can help you with.
